Clear Braces

Braces are the best solution to misaligned teeth and a revitalised smile. They also help improve the bite, and deal with widely spaced teeth and crooked teeth. Among the braces in the market are the clear orthodontics, wire and bracket braces, inside braces and invisible braces, among others. Clear braces have become popular nowadays due to a number of benefits I have explained below.

What Is the Difference Between Invisible Braces and Clear Ones

Clear braces are like your conventional wire or bracket braces but have clear brackets with most of the times with tooth-coloured wires. The brackets are either made of plastic polycarbonate or clear ceramic. On the other hand, invisible aligners, also called Invisalign, are removable aligners that are customised according to the shape of the mouth. Therefore, the mode of working of each of the types is different. This is why Invisalign is not deemed as braces.

Who Can Wear Clear Braces?

I recommend clear braces mostly to teenagers. This is because their teeth and jaws are still developing at this stage. However, this does not mean that adults cannot wear braces. If you are already in your mid-20’s or 30’s, you can still pick this orthodontic treatment and get good results. The determining factor for the choice of the braces is the severity of your teeth misalignment. For example, Invisalign braces may not work with badly misaligned teeth. This problem requires the wire and bracket system.

How Do Clear Braces Work

Once the clear braces are fastened to the tooth, the system pulls together the misaligned teeth by manipulating the teeth in all directions. It takes about 18 months to two years to fully align the teeth, depending on the severity of the problem. Some patients get better within a shorter period. We usually take a three-dimensional impression of the teeth so that the aligners can be fit according to the shape and size of your mouth. The main benefit with the clear systems is that it is not overly visible like the traditional braces. You can wear them for the entire period without getting self-image and confidence problems when with your friends.

New technologies have made the adjustment of the braces a lot easier and less irritating to the patients. In the recent past, we had to tighten the wire after every short while. This would make many people experience discomfort and soreness. However, the new technology allows the braces to self-gate and adjust with the gradual alignment of the teeth. You may experience a little discomfort before the teeth and your mouth gets used to the new fittings. However, this takes a short period. Your dentist may also give you orthodontic wax to reduce abrasion.

Taking Care of Your Teeth with Clear Braces

Your teeth require extra care when you wear braces to keep both the fittings and the teeth in good condition. Avoid hard foods like ice and nuts, chewy foods like bagels and candies and acidic foods like pickles and vinaigrette dressings. Your dentist may give additional instructions that you should follow.
